Finally. It’s here! The world’s first ever statue of Alfred Russel Wallace was unveiled by Sir David Attenborough at the Natural History Museum on Thursday 7th November, marking the 100th anniversary of Wallace’s death. Bill Bailey, Patron of the Wallace Memorial Fund, was also present at the unveiling to pay tribute to his “Jungle Hero”.
Wallace, along with Charles Darwin, was the co-discoverer of the theory of evolution by natural selection.
The statue, by acclaimed sculptor Anthony Smith, shows Wallace in his thirties in the field with a butterfly net during his expedition to the Malay Archipelago. It captures the moment he first saw the magnificent golden birdwing butterfly, on Bacan Island, Indonesia, in 1859.
Entangled Bank Events is proud to have made a major contribution to the fundraising for the statue.
